Certification of Translated Documents

The Consulate provides certification of documents translated both from Russian into English and from English into Russian. This service is available for documents up to two pages of size (also see Translator’s Signature Certification). Certification is provided in regard to IDs (Russian and foreign drivers’ licenses, foreign passports, permanent residence cards – “Green Cards”), vital records documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, certificates of name changed, death certificates), extracts from legal resolutions and court decisions, certificates issued by financial, educational and medical institutions as well as certain types of civil documents. Russian passports international and domestic, military and other IDs are not subject to translation and cannot be certified.

In accordance with the Hague Convention of October 5, 1961, abolishing the Legalization of Foreign Public Documents, Russian documents translated into English to be further used in the United States must be authenticated by an apostille. Likewise apostille is required for American documents translated into Russian for use in the Russian Federation. To obtain an apostille on documents notarized in the U.S. you must apply to the Secretary of State in the state in which the document was issued or notarized. The Secretary of State contact information and fees information are available at http://travel.state.gov/law/hague_foreign_docs.html (State Authentication Authorities section). IDs and documents directly related to commercial or customs operations cannot be authenticated by an apostille.

To apply for Certification of Translation the following documents should be submitted to The Consulate (either in person or by mail): an original or a notarized copy of a document authenticated by an apostille and translation of a document and an apostille (also see Example of Translation of an Apostille). Electronic copies (on floppy disk or CD) of both a document and an apostille are also required for possible corrections. The fee is  $30 per page of original text. Please note that only Money orders are accepted. If applying by mail a self-addressed stamped return envelope or prepaid waybill must be enclosed.

Certification of Translated Documents is executed within 5 business days from the moment of documents submission to The Consulate.
